The Babėnai quarry was excavated between 1950 and 1953 and used as a sand and gravel deposit. The southern shores are steep, cliff-like, and covered with the Babėnai forest. The eastern shores are also steep, overgrown with forest and reed thickets. The western shores are similarly steep and lined with a wide belt of reeds (over 10 m). The northern shores are shallow, also fringed with reeds and bulrushes. The quarry measures about 500 m in length, 400 m in width, and has a depth of 2–3 meters, with gently sloping shallows along the shoreline.
In summer, the Babėnai pond becomes a popular swimming spot. The bathing area has been renovated with new stairs, piers, fresh sand on the beach, changing cabins, benches, and bicycle racks.
