Although the settlement is primarily associated with the Melioration Construction Board established during the Soviet era, its history dates back to the 16th century, or possibly even earlier. The village of Pelėdnagiai was first mentioned in 1659. By 1674, Pelėdnagiai already had 42 “chimneys” (households). After the troubles at the beginning of the 18th century, only eleven farms remained in Pelėdnagiai. At that time, the village belonged to the Kėdainiai County, managed by Jeronimas Florijonas Radvila.
In the 19th century, a water mill was built on the Nevėžis River, and an inn operated in the village. By the end of the 19th century, a factory producing wood pulp for cardboard was in operation. It is said that there was also a brickworks, which was rebuilt in 1921. Stone stables were constructed along the Nevėžis riverbank.
In 1923, Pelėdnagiai was referred to both as a mill and as a manor. After the wars for independence, Colonel Justinas Kibirkštis settled here. To this day, the stable buildings and a fragment of the linden tree avenue remain.
The Ašarėna Pond in Pelėdnagiai is a popular swimming spot among Kėdainiai residents.
Visitors to Pelėdnagiai enjoy booking the educational program “In the Owl Village”. You will hear stories about owls and the history of the settlement, make a bracelet, and even taste an owl’s egg. We highly recommend this program—it consistently receives excellent feedback from participants.
Pelėdnagiai loves owls. They can be found in village squares, yards, near houses, and along roads. Guests will have fun counting them: there are 40 owl sculptures in total!
