Mikalojus Katkus was a prose writer, ethnographer, distributor of Lithuanian books during the ban of the Lithuanian press and the first Lithuanian certified agronomer. He wrote the novel "Balanos gadynė", which depicted the lifestyle, customs and traditions of Lithuanian peasants at the end of the XIXth – the beginning of the XXth centuries. There is Memorial Museum of Mikalojus Katkus in Ažytėnai.
